SPORTS ADDICT: Bulldogs lost on awful call by officials

By Denton Ramsey, Managing Editor

Sometimes, life isn’t fair.

The Bulldogs found that out on the gridiron on Friday night in Marlin, dropping a must-win football game due to a pathetic call by the officials.

On an evening that saw the Centerville Tigers bring their A-game while the hometown Bulldogs brought their D-game, Marlin was in for a battle.

But the Bulldogs stood to the challenge, with the secondary playing to near perfection on the Tigers barrage of downs inside the Marlin 25-yard line.

After swatting away a fourth-and-long attempt with only seconds left in the game, the Bulldogs appeared headed towards a nail-biting victory.

That’s when the officials tossed a late flag – a ridiculous pass interference call against Marlin that gave Centerville new life, as well as a new set of downs, with under a minute remaining in the contest.

Marlin didn’t deserve to lose this one.

But they did.

Due primarily to an awful call by the men in stripes in the game’s waning seconds, Centerville walked into the end zone with 18 ticks left on the clock to shock Marlin in a 19-18 Tigers victory over the Bulldogs.

After the final horn sounded, the Bulldogs players and coaches hit the locker room as if in a daze – staring blankly at what should have been.

It’s a sad commentary when the officials control the game, especially in the game’s final seconds.

But that is exactly what happened on Friday night at the Bulldogs gridiron, as Marlin’s shot at victory was completely robbed by the officials.

Goes to show that life really isn’t fair – both on and off the field of play.
