SPORTS ADDICT: Bulldogs continue off-season work

By Denton Ramsey, Managing Editor

Although the summer has only just begun, football is still on the hearts and minds of many Texas athletes, parents and fans.

And there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be.

Let’s not forget that in the wonderful state of Texas, pigskin season comes second to only God and church.

Many times, football season is the talk of the town – from the season’s first snap to the season finale tackle.

However, come summer time, it’s time to focus on rebuilding and repairing as a new season prepares to shine down on the state in just a couple short months.

For the players, that means hitting the weight room, staying in shape and, of course, continuing to play the game that matters to them most.

In Texas and beyond, summer football equals 7-on-7.

And summer life’s no different in Marlin.

The local Bulldogs 7-on-7 team recently returned from a tourney held at Rice University in Houston, going a perfect 3-0 before falling in the final four.

For our small-town boys from Marlin, a perfect showing in Houston prior to the local ‘final four’ is something to be proud of.

Bulldogs football head coach Jerry Malone should be pleased with his team’s latest results, and hopefully the pre-season success will carry over to a fantastic start to the 2007 season.

Only time will tell – however, I digress.

Marlin’s 7-on-7 football team has remained busy, and the off-season scrimmages are far from over.

In just a matter of weeks, the Bulldogs squad will be gathering together to begin the always dreaded two-a-days.

However, many times it’s the work completed at ‘hot as the sun’ practices that turn great athletes into champions.

What’s done in the off-season and pre-season is what truly molds a team together and forms a championship.

Are the 2007 Bulldogs headed toward a title?

It’s way too early to begin guessing, but it’s never too early to begin discussing.

Heck, it won’t be long before we begin packing our small-town stadium under Friday night’s lights to enjoy another memorable Bulldogs football game.

Until the upcoming season begins, I’ll see y’all around town…
