SPORTS ADDICT: With March right around the corner, the Madness has already begun…

By Denton Ramsey / Managing Editor

Okay, so tell me if this sounds familiar.

Your college team is on the bubble, and these final games in these final weeks matter more than anything in the world.

If that’s the case, welcome to the world of March Madness.

Granted, it’s only late February, but the madness has already begun.

In the realm of high school hoops, our local Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs won the regular season district-title.

The Lady Bulldogs were a perfect 14-0 before falling in the second round of postseason play.

Our Bulldogs, meanwhile, began their playoff run against Newton on Friday.

In college basketball, the local Texas Big 12 teams are having another great season.

Unfortunately, the Baylor Bears have once again struggled, but head coach Scott Drew has done a remarkable job with the young BU program and it definitely appears to be on the rise.

With a solid win against Nebraska on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center, the Bears proved they are a much-improved team from last year.

This season, we’ve been in almost every game as the contests have come down to the wire.

And as a former Baylor student and a die-hard Bear fan, I’m wrapped in green and gold in support of each and every BU athletics programs.

In the NBA, meanwhile, our local Texas teams are hot.

The Dallas Mavericks own the best record in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs remain solid and the Houston Rockets appear to be stronger than ever.

Houston’s Rockets defeated the Miami Heat on Wednesday night at Toyota Center, and for probably the first time in my life I heard Bill Walton praising Houston’s basketball team on ESPN.

But they have every reason to be praised.

Especially after making the biggest move of any NBA team in the off-season by acquiring Shane Battier – our future President.

Battier does it all – and he does it without complaining while always smiling.

It’s a habit Shane picked up at Duke University while playing under the greatest coach of all time in Mike Krzyzewski.

And for Battier, it’s a habit that comes naturally for a born leader both on and off the court.

Speaking of Duke, how about those Blue Devils?

After falling from the top 25 for the first time in a decade, the Blue Devils appear to be back on track.

And when talking about March, you can’t discuss the Madness without discussing Duke Basketball.

For the epitome of greatness, look no further than Coach K and his Blue Devils.

Granted, Coach K and company are without a go-to guy like J.J. Redick or Shelden Williams this season, but we have a young squad full of extremely talented players.

Forget the record books; forget the stats.

Come NCAA Tourney time, all records are erased and everyone starts on a clean slate.

And that’s a good thing – for everyone except those facing Duke in March.

The time is almost here – let the madness begin…
