Warriors go 2-2 at Plano Wildcat Classic

The South Grand Prairie Warriors garnered a 2-2 record at the Plano Wildcat Classic, Dec. 28-30.
With the .500 record over the four-game span, the Warriors improve to 14-3 overall (1-0 in district).
After picking up victories in the tourney’s openers on both Thursday and Friday, the Warriors dropped the final two games of the tourney.
SGP returns to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 2 as the Warriors prepare to host their rivals at Grand Prairie.
Tip time for the Jan. 2 match-up between the Warriors and the Gophers is set for 7:30 p.m. at SGP High School.
Dec. 28 Highlights: SGP 55, Garland Naaman Forest 53
Four Warriors scored in double figures as SGP defeated Garland Naaman Forest, 55-53 on Thursday, Dec. 28 in round one of the Plano Wildcat Classic.
After taking a 26-20 Warriors lead into the half, Garland battled back in the third quarter to deadlock the game at 40-40 heading into the final period.
But the fourth belonged to SGP, as the Warriors used solid defense to help propel the team to a two-point victory on Thursday night.
SGP’s Donell Lewis hit a go-ahead lay-up with 14.4 seconds remaining in regulation before taking a charge with 7.6 seconds left in the game to help secure a Warriors victory.
Lewis led the Warriors in scoring with 13 points, with teammates Darius Gregory adding 12 points, Justin Monk putting up 11 points and Robert Ballard chipping in with 10 points.
Antoine Williams led all scorers with 25 points for Garland Naaman Forest.
Dec. 29 Highlights (Game One): SGP 54, Colleyville Heritage 40
The Warriors were battled tightly for three periods of play on Friday morning, Dec. 29 before SGP finally pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 54-40 victory over Colleyville Heritage in round two of the Plano Wildcat Classic.
For the Warriors, the victory is a bit of sweet revenge after the SGP football team fell to Colleyville Heritage in postseason play.
Lindsey Hughey and Lewis led the Warriors in scoring with 12 points apiece as teammates Ballard and Gregory chipped in with 10 points each.
Matthew Friday led all scorers with 15 points for Colleyville Heritage.
After a slow start for both squads saw a 6-6 tie after one, the Warriors managed to take a 22-17 lead into halftime.
However, after three quarters of play SGP still held onto a slim five-point margin, 31-26.
But the fourth was all Warriors, as SGP outscored their opponent 23-14 in the final frame to walk away with a 14-point victory.
Dec. 29 Highlights (Game Two): Plano 57, SGP 56
This time around, there would be no comeback victory for the Warriors.
But not without controversy.
Hughey appeared to hit a game-tying three-pointer at the final buzzer, but one official ruled Hughey’s foot was on the line and overruled the call.
The SGP varsity boys’ basketball team fell to Plano High School, 57-56 in a down-to-the-wire match-up in Friday’s round three action in the Plano Wildcat Classic.
A tightly contested first half saw a 28-28 tie at halftime before the Warriors managed to inch their way to a two-point lead, 46-44, after three quarters of play.
But the Wildcats outscored the visiting Warriors in the fourth and final frame, 13-10, to steal a victory from SGP, 57-56.
The Warriors led most of the third quarter and had a 50-48 lead with 3:48 remaining in the frame before the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.
Plano’s John Roberson, who was held scoreless in the first half, led all scorers with 31 points as the Wildcats advanced to the title game with the victory; the Warriors dropping to play Mesquite in the consolation game.
Roberson hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws in the final minutes of play to help clinch the victory for Plano.
For SGP, Hughey led the team in the scoring department with 23 points, while teammate Lewis chipped in with 13 points.
Dec. 30 Highlights: Mesquite 56, SGP 48
After a bittersweet defeat in Friday’s second game of the day with the Plano Wildcats, the SGP Warriors just couldn’t get on track on Saturday, Dec. 30 at the Plano Wildcat Classic.
SGP fell to Mesquite, 56-48 in the consolation game at the Plano Wildcat Classic on Saturday morning.
After a sloppy first half saw SGP take a 27-21 lead into halftime, the Warriors allowed Mesquite to get right back into things – and take the lead – after getting outscored 22-4 in the third quarter.
With Mesquite leading 43-31 after three, it was too little, too late for the Warriors as SGP managed to make things look a little closer by outscoring their opponent 17-13 in the fourth and final quarter.
Mesquite’s Vertrail Vaughns led all scorers with 23 points.
For the Warriors, Lewis led in scoring with 15 points while Gregory added 10 points.
After going 2-2 at the Plano Wildcat Classic, the Warriors drop to 14-3 overall while maintaining a 1-0 record in district.
A Look Ahead: Grand Prairie – Tuesday, Jan. 2 @ SGP High School, 7:30 p.m.
The Warriors return home to battle district rival Grand Prairie on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at South Grand Prairie High.
Tip time for the game between the Warriors and the Gophers is set for 7:30 p.m. at SGP High School.
After Tuesday’s match-up with Grand Prairie, the Warriors continue with district action by traveling to Hurst L.D. Bell on Friday, Jan. 5.
