The Grand Prairie Association of Wrestling (GPAW) Grizzlies continue to find success on the mats.

During the recent Frisco tournament, the Grizzles brought home four more medals.

Results are as follows:

Justin Alkins, Division 1, 72 lbs, 2nd Place

John Thomas Barnes, Division 2, 55 lbs, 1st Place

Kelly Murray, Division 2, 61 lbs, 4th Place

Trey Smith, Division 3, 135 lbs, 3rd Place

“With respect to the season so far, we have around 28 wrestlers, an increase of about 50 percent over last year,” Grizzles head coach Ken Murray said. “What seems to be the most exciting about this year’s season is the number of entrants at the weekend tournaments.

“Wrestling in North Texas is growing and the tournaments are showing it. Tournaments that hosted 600 wrestlers last year have exceeded 700 on two separate occasions. The tournament organization is also improving, allowing for this growth in the same number of hours in a day.

“The Frisco tournament used 11 mats, started on time and, most importantly, ended on time. I haven’t been to a tournament in the last two years that ever ended when it was scheduled to end.”

In addition to the rise in popularity of the sport of wrestling, the Grizzlies appear to be boasting the best of the bests.

“Our team seems to represent the growth of the sport in our Region and that is very exciting,” Murray said. “Our returning wrestlers are picking up right where they left off with many taking medals from the get go.

“This weekend is the Allen tournament [Dec. 16] and we expect to bring home our fair share of medals, even with the increased number of participants. We’re a scrappy bunch and our relatively small Club size is not keeping us from making a statement each week.”

After the Allen Tourney, the Grizzlies return to the mats on Dec. 29th and 30th at the Cotton Bowl.
