Warriors’ hoops team pushes win-streak to six games

The South Grand Prairie Warriors’ varsity boys basketball team improved to 8-1 overall with a 4-0 week, including a 90-82 victory over Fort Worth Southwest on Saturday, Dec. 2 in the Mansfield Tournament Championship.

In Saturday’s tourney title game, the Warriors outscored their opponent 27-15 in the first quarter before Fort Worth Southwest turned things around in the second quarter to hit the half with SGP up two, 43-41.

But the third quarter was all South Grand Prairie, as the Warriors jumped all over Fort Worth Southwest to begin the second half – outscoring their opponent 29-19 to take a 72-60 lead into the fourth quarter.

And although SGP was outscored 22-18 in the fourth and final quarter, the Warriors held on for a 90-82 victory over Fort Worth Southwest in the Mansfield Tournament championship game.

Darius Gregory led the Warriors in scoring with 22 points, while teammate Robert Ballard added 20 points.

Also chipping in was Lindsey Hughey with 19 points, Conwell Jackson with 13 points and Donell Lewis with 11 points.

The Warriors began the Mansfield Tournament with a 59-44 blowout victory over Carrollton Creekview on Friday, Dec. 1 to advance to the second round.

And in round two action which began on Saturday morning, Dec. 2, the Warriors outplayed Colleyville Heritage, taking a dramatic 52-50 victory into the title game.

In Saturday’s round two win over Colleyville Heritage, the Warriors found themselves down by eight at the break, 30-22.

But SGP battled back in the second half, only to find themselves down by 10 after three quarters of play, 42-32.

Then, in the fourth and final quarter, the Warriors’ hoops team came to life.

South Grand Prairie outscored Colleyville Heritage 20-8 in the fourth quarter en route to a 52-50 comeback victory.

In Saturday’s round two morning victory, Hughey and Ballard led the Warriors with 14 points apiece.

Jackson chipped in with 9 points in the Warriors victory over Colleyville Heritage.

With the tourney wins, the Warriors are now riding a six-game win-streak.

Last Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Warriors defeated state-ranked North Crowley (No. 11 in the 5A polls) at SGP High School, 52-49.

After a tight first half saw the Warriors on top, 31-26, things heated up on the court in the second half.

And although the Warriors took a 47-40 lead into the fourth quarter, the game came down to the wire in a tightly contested final quarter.

But SGP found a way to win, and despite being outscored by their opponent 9-5 in the fourth quarter, the Warriors held on for a 52-49 victory.

Leading the way in scoring for the Warriors was Lewis with 17 points and Jackson with 11 points.

Teammates Hughey and Gregory chipped in with 9 points apiece in the Warriors three-point victory over North Crowley.

The Warriors returned to the court on Tuesday night, hosting Arlington Lamar at 7:30 p.m. at SGP High School, and results can be seen in next week’s issue.

After Tuesday’s home game, the Warriors return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 12 in a road battle at Coppell.

Tip time for the Dec. 12 game is set for 6 p.m.
