Lady Warriors have 2-1 week, improve to 5-7 overall

The South Grand Prairie Lady Warriors’ varsity basketball team went 2-1 this past week to help improve the overall team record to 5-7.

The Lady Warriors began the week with a 71-43 blowout victory over Trinity Christian – Addison in the DeSoto Tournament opener on Friday, Dec. 1.

With the victory, the Lady Warriors advanced to face Cleburne in the second round on Saturday, Dec. 2.

And although the Lady Warriors played a tightly contested first half, Cleburne proved to be too much for the girls in the second half.

Cleburne outscored SGP 24-13 in the third quarter as the Lady Warriors fell to Cleburne, 70-57 in the second round opening game on Saturday.

Erin Lewis led the Lady Warriors in scoring with 18 points, while teammate Breanisha Byrd added 15 points and Tiera Williams chipped in with 12 points.

With the loss, the Lady Warriors moved on to play the DeSoto Junior Varsity squad in the consolation game.

SGP found themselves down at the half, 22-19, before the Lady Warriors came out hot in the third quarter.

The Lady Warriors outscored the DeSoto JV team 13-1 in the third quarter en route to a 50-31 victory.

For the Lady Warriors, Williams led the team in scoring with 14 points while Lewis added 12 points.

Imani Wilson also chipped in with 10 points in the Lady Warriors 19-point victory over the DeSoto JV squad.

The Lady Warriors returned to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 5 on the road against Keller, and results can be found in next week’s issue.

After Tuesday’s road game, the Lady Warriors return to action on Friday, Dec. 8 as the girls host Carter beginning at 7:30 p.m. at SGP High School.

SGP will then hit the road for Irving Nimitz on Tuesday, Dec. 12 as district action begins.

Tip time for the Dec. 12 game is set for 7:30 p.m.
