Nov. 10 Friday Night Highlights: Warriors end regular season with 35-14 road victory against Rangers

The South Grand Prairie Warriors pushed their win streak to six straight with a 35-14 victory over the Jesuit Rangers on Nov. 10 at Haggar Stadium.

Starting quarterback Denzel Dewberry was sidelined with injury, sitting out as a precaution with the postseason beginning next week, as Matthew Maldonado took the helm at quarterback on Friday night.

Shortly after SGP took a 14-7 lead on a beautiful pass from Maldonado to Trae Johnson, the Warriors’ Carson Wiggs kicked the pigskin out of the end zone for a Rangers touchback to begin the ensuing drive.

But just one play later, the Rangers were chasing daylight on a game-tying 80-yard touchdown run to deadlock the game, 14-14.

Three Warrior plays later, Maldonado took a shot in the backfield – a season-ending ankle injury – as sophomore junior varsity quarterback Cedric Bates took over for SGP.

And the JV QB had an impressive showing, driving the team down the field and into the end zone on a great pass to Johnson for a 21-14 lead heading into halftime.

The second half was all SGP, as the Warriors “D” woke up after a slow start.

South Grand Prairie punched the pigskin into the end zone two more times on the night, as the defense stood strong, for the 35-14 Warriors victory.

With the win, the Warriors have now rattled off six straight victories heading into postseason play to improve to 9-1 overall (6-1 in district).

South Grand Prairie begins the playoffs next Friday, Nov. 17 in a battle against Arlington Bowie at Mansfield’s new stadium.

Kick off is slated for 7:30 p.m. for the Warriors’ round one action.
