ASTROS ADDICTION: Houston’s back on track? You bet your Astros…

By Denton Ramsey / Astros Blogger

The Houston Astros are on a roll right now in the National League, drawing attention from all around the majors with their latest string of victories.

Houston pulled to within one game of .500 on Friday night, a feat that seemed nearly impossible a few short weeks ago.

But thanks to a late second half surge, the Astros are right back in the hunt for October as the race for postseason play heats up.

Granted, we lost last night 6-3 with our rookie righty Jason Hirsh making his debut, but we have still won four of our last five.

And this afternoon (Sunday), we face off against San Diego in the rubber game of the series at Minute Maid Park with Brandon Backe on the mound for Houston.

Backe has shown signs of dominance since his return from injury and currently holds a 3-1 record with a 3.69 ERA.

Counterpart Woody Williams (4-4, 3.89) will be starting for the Padres in today’s match-up beginning at 1:05 p.m. on FSN Houston.

I love the Houston Astros with a passion, and I truly feel these guys have a chance to really turn things around (as they have begun to do so already) during the last stretch of this homestand.

Looking beyond this afternoon’s game with the Padres, the Cubbies with be calling next as the Wizard takes the mound in game one tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.

I can’t wait to watch the Astros push for the playoffs beginning this afternoon with the always-happy, always-smiling, always-talking Backe on the mound.

With that being said, I need to go grab a Dr. Pepper and turn on the T.V. – the first pitch is in a mere 30 minutes…
