The Houston Astros begin a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at 7:05 p.m. with Brandon Backe (2-1, 4.38) facing off against Paul Maholm (2-9, 4.83) at Minute Maid Park.

Houston’s three-game series against Pittsburgh is just the beginning of a long nine-game homestand for the Astros – and for the Killer B’s and company, there’s no place like home.

The Astros are 30-26 at Minute Maid Park, compared to 23-32 on the road. In addition, the Astros have won four of their last six games – including taking two of three from both San Diego and Arizona on the road.

Houston is 4-2 against Pittsburgh this season and holds a 39-11 record vs. the Pirates at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros are currently in third place in the National League Central, sitting eight games behind the first-place St. Louis Cardinals and 3.5 games behind both Cincinnati and Los Angeles in the NL Wild Card race.

Houston leads the NL in double plays with 111 (third best in MLB) and has completed the fewest errors in the league with 52.

Also, Houston’s Luke Scott has been on fire lately, batting .403 with two homeruns and nine RBI since joining the team on July 13.

Houston’s homestand begins tonight with Backe battling Maholm as the Astros aim to regain momentum at Minute Maid Park.

Tonight’s first pitch between the Astros and the Pirates is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on FSN Houston.
