Sports Addict: NUMBER NINE – Duke enters ninth consecutive Sweet 16 as rival Tar Heels fall to George Mason

It’s now mid-March. And the madness continues.

Seniors J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams helped propel Duke into the Sweet 16 for the ninth consecutive appearance as the Blue-Devils’ immense rival, UNC, fell to George Mason in round two of the 2006 Madness.

Meanwhile, other upsets began brewing in round two, with Pittsburgh falling to Bradley, Illinois bowing out to Washington, Wichita State knocking out Tennessee and Georgetown blowing out Ohio State.

And now, we’re into the chaos of the madness–also known as the Sweet 16.

Now is when the fun begins.

Nine straight Sweet 16’s is no easy task, but nothing is impossible with Coach K at the helm.

Bleeding Blue-Devil blue, you have to know what’s in store come tip-off tonight.

Duke will be battling LSU this evening around 6:10 p.m, as the Blue Devils look to insure that the Tigers will be home watching the Elite Eight after a near-upset from Texas A&M in round two.

No doubt, Duke will advance to the Elite Eight.

And from there, it’s onto the Final Four.

The reason for the season? Coach K.

I know I have spent many words praising the Duke basketball program and Coach K, but they deserve it.

They have the hearts of champions and they play as a fist.

And that’s all it takes… hard work and discipline.

Coach K instills these basic fundamentals and values into each and every player that sets foot on the court at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Basic fundamentals are what wins ball games.

Knowing what it takes to win, then following the basic guidlines to accomplish the task at hand.

Coach K and the Duke program have had plenty of success in the past, but it’s been too long since our last title.

Many great basketball players have paraded through the Duke program under the wings of Coach K, but I’m not sure if I have ever seen a player quite as remarkable as J.J. Redick ever come through Duke’s prestigious doors.

But we all know we will see both Redick and Williams at the NBA level.

They both have the talent and mental capability to play and perform to the best of their ability for any team currently playing in the NBA.

However, I digress…

We’re here to talk about March and the madness that comes along with the month.

And as tonight’s games quickly approach, I can’t wait to be standing, screaming and hollering while bouncing around the room in my J.J. jersey going crazy for my Blue Devils as they battle the LSU Tigers.

Come Saturday, it’s back to the locker room to change into the J.J. jersey with even more at stake — all part of the madness that comes along with the college hoops season.

I love it… with a passion.

Some people may question an addiction to sports, but who in their right mind can’t absolutely love this time of year?

Other games tonight include a match-up between Texas and West Virginia at 8:40 p.m., Memphis vs. Bradley at 6:27 p.m. and Gonzaga taking on UCLA at 8:57 p.m.

Tomorrow’s games include Connecticut vs. Washington at 8:57 p.m., George Mason vs. Wichita State at 6:27 p.m., Villanova vs. Boston College at 6:10 p.m. and Florida vs. Georgetown at 8:40 p.m.

All of the madness can be seen live on CBS.

So, until next week, let the madness continue.

Come game time tonight, J.J. will be draining three’s from no-man’s-land and the Landlord will be slamming down the leather and pulling down the boards in a blowout victory against the Tigers of LSU.

And from there? Bring on Texas or West Virginia. Either way, the Blue Devils will be battling to cut down the nets come April 1.

And coach K and the Devils will have their championship for the first time since 2001.

So mark your calenders, because April 1 means only one thing–it’s championship day for the Blue Devils of Duke University.
