The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks 7-on-7 football team made a trip to Fort Stockton last Thursday and left town with two more wins, putting the squad at 12-1 on the season with the state championship tourney scheduled for this weekend in College Station.

Alpine took game one of the tourney by knocking off Fort Stockton 47-31.

In game two, the Bucks creamed Marfa, defeating the Shorthorns by 53 points, 66-13.

Coach Mike Sanchez said he was extremely pleased with his team’s performance in last week’s tournament, and feels confident heading into this weekend’s state tourney.

“The key for us to win is stay focused and play our game,” Sanchez said. “The teams we are playing are 4A and 5A schools, but we’ve gone against 4A and 5A schools this season. And we’ve got 20 kids ready to play.”

At this time, the 2A Bucks are scheduled to play Stephenville (4A), The Woodlands (5A) and Weatherford (5A) in pool play on Friday afternoon.

With a winning record (3-0 or 2-1), the Bucks will advance and play at 9 a.m. on Saturday. With a losing record, the team would drop into the consolation game to be played at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

This is Alpine’s first-ever 7-on-7 State Championship appearance. As far as the competition is concerned, Stephenville did not compete in the 2004 Championship, while The Woodlands and Weatherford did not advance past pool play in 2004.
