Denton Ramsey new Avalanche staff writer

Denton Ramsey, 26, has joined the staff of the Alpine Avalanche as a staff writer.

“I’m excited to be here and can’t wait to start covering news and the local area,” he said. “Because I grew up in Texas, it’s exciting to be back. I look forward to getting to know the community and doing what I can to add to an already great newspaper.”

Ramsey grew up in Houston and attended Baylor University in Waco from 1997-2001.

His previous job was working as the sports editor for The Demopolis Times in West Alabama.

Ramsey first became involved in journalism as a freshman in high school, working on the newspaper staff from 1994-97.

While a student at Baylor, he worked on the Lariat newspaper staff as a general news reporter, a sports reporter and news editor.

After leaving Waco in 2001, Ramsey worked many free-lance writing jobs from the Waco Tribune Herald to the Dallas Morning News and Denton Record Chronicle.

In August of 2004, he moved from Denton to Demopolis, Ala., to work as the sports editor for The Demopolis Times, where he helped cover Demopolis High School and their journey to two state titles during his tenure-one in football and another in baseball.

Ramsey, who is not married, will be working at the Avalanche covering general news assignments with a focus on sports.

His goals as a staff writer for the Avalanche include expansion of local sports coverage as well as a focus on local news stories.

“We’re proud to welcome Denton to Alpine and the Avalanche,” said Publisher Harry T. Darby. “We know he’ll do well here, and we think he’s a great fit for our community. We’re going to keep him busy.”
