The Alpine Bucks 7-on-7 football team will be battling it out at Buck Stadium tonight at 5 p.m. as they prepare for the state championship, which will be held July 15-16 at Texas A&M.

Tonight’s tournament will be free of charge and hot dogs and drinks will be sold as a fundraiser for next month’s trip to College Station.

After having a very successful campaign thus far in 2005, the Bucks have high hopes for bringing home a state title to Alpine.

“We’re 7-1 right now,” Coach Mike Sanchez said, “And we’ve still got the championship in sight with a goal of going 13-1.”

Tenative teams participating in Thursday’s games include Marfa, Van Horn, Fort Davis and Fort Stockton.

The Bucks team is currently comprised of approximately 20 kids with half of them being seperated into the varsity group and the remainder playing on the J.V. squad.

“Our speed and catching ability are the greatest strengths of our team,” Sanchez said. “We went to El Paso with speed but no size and only dropped four balls in the whole tournament.”

According to Coach Sanchez, the 7-on-7 summer league football program has given the high school players an opportunity to continue their training in the off-season, and will help prepare them for the upcoming season.

Sanchez takes pride in his job as the Bucks’ head coach, knowing his leadership will help to mold his players into a disciplined and dedicated team.

Talent is abundent on the Bucks squad, and the potential Sanchez sees in his young team makes the future look bright for Alpine High School.

Numbers are hard to ignore, and after a 7-1 start to the 2005 summer season, opposing teams have begun to realize that the Buck stops here in Alpine…
