DHS seniors prepared for today’s games

DEMOPOLIS – The Demopolis High School seniors on the varsity baseball team have been in this situation before – last year – and this season they are ready to put the past behind them as they aim to clinch their second title of the year.

This afternoon at 4 p.m. at the DHS ballpark, the battle will begin between Demopolis and Thomasville in the AHSAA 4A semifinals.

“We need to make plays on defense if we expect to win,” Devin Goodwin said. “We’re swinging the bat real well and pitching good, so if we can keep that up we can win.”

As far as the greatest strength of this year’s Tigers, G.W. Washington said “it would have to be hitting. And as long as pitching holds up, we’ll win.”

Goodwin agreed, adding that the team feeds off of positive energy both in the locker room and on the field.

“We all feed off of eachother and then it just starts rolling,” Goodwin said. “When one of us starts hitting well it just spreads and before you know it we’re all hitting well.”

Team chemistry is another reason for the vast success of the 2005 DHS baseball program.

“I think unity is the main thing,” Seth Basinger said. “We’ve all been playing with eachother since we were about five.”

Beginning this afternoon at 4 p.m., the seniors as well as the rest of the Tigers will be tested as they face-off against Thomasville in a best-of-three series for a chance to fight for the 2005 state title.
