DHS Softball picks up wins
DEMOPOLIS – The Demopolis High School softball team took care of business in the first home game last night, defeating Thomasville 5-1.
Brittany McGee (5-1) pitched a complete game for Demopolis, giving up only five hits and striking out eight batters.
Leading the way offensively for DHS was Brittany Thorne, connecting for two singles and two RBIs. Brittany McGee added a single and an RBI triple and Morgan Patterson picked up a sacrifice fly. Dorothy Knapp also contributed with a single.
“It’s good to win that first area game,” DHS head coach Wayne Harris said. “They [Thomasville] are one of the teams we will have to beat to advance in the playoffs. Everyone did their job tonight, and that’s why we won.”
GULF SHORES – The Demopolis High School softball team went 4-2 in this past weekend’s tournament in Gulf Shores to improve their season record to 7-5.
In the first game of the tourney, DHS lost to Benjamin Russell 6-3. Brandi McGee (1-3) picked up the loss for DHS.
Leading the way offensively for DHS in their first game of the tourney was Brittany McGee with two hits and an RBI and India Chancelor with two hits.
Also contributing for the Lady Tigers was Molly Barnes and Morgan Patterson with one hit each.
In game two, the Lady Tigers beat University School 13-2 as Sara Davis (1-1) picked up the win.
Leading the way for DHS in game two was Dorothy Knapp, who went 3-for-3, and Sara Davis, who had two hits.
Also contributing with a hit each was Hunter Lewis, Brittany McGee, and India Chancelor.
The junior varsity team also had a chance to play in the weekend’s tournament without it going on the girls’ record.
In the JV game, DHS lost 3-0 to Benjamin Russell. Sara Davis picked up the loss for DHS to bring her JV record to 1-1.
In game three, the Lady Tigers were pitted against Holtville and won 9-1. Brittany McGee (4-0) picked up the win for the Lady Tigers.
Leading the way offensively for DHS was Dorothy Knapp, with two singles and a two-run homerun, Brittany McGee, with two singles, and Kristen Etheridge, also with two singles.
In game four, the Lady Tigers faced Escambia County and won 1-0. Brandi McGee (2-3) picked up the win for DHS.
In the third inning against Escambia County, the Lady Tigers plated the only run of the game. After Molly Barnes was walked, Stewart Gross laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring Barnes to second. And after a passed ball, Barnes was able to score the lone run of the game.
In game five, the Lady Tigers again faced Benjamin Russell, falling 6-2. Brittany McGee (4-1) picked up the loss for DHS.
Leading the way offensively for Demopolis was India Chancelor, with two hits, and Morgan Patterson, with two hits. Also contributing with one hit each was Dorothy Knapp, Brandi McGee, and Brittany McGee.
The Lady Tigers returned to action last night against Thomasville at home and will be back on the field on Thursday night when they host Choctaw County.
The junior varsity game against Choctaw County is set for 4:00 p.m. and the first pitch for the varsity game is set for 6:00 p.m.
