A closer look at local high school football action

DHS Update

The Demopolis Tigers football team will be on the road again this week to face Greene County.

The DHS Tigers beat Jemison last Friday, 55-16, as head coach Doug Goodwin and his boys continue their quest for a perfect season.

“So far everything is going pretty good,” Goodwin said. “I feel we played really well on Friday night in all three phases of the game. As far as what we are looking forward to, we’re looking to play Greene County this Friday on the road. And we’re just going to try to keep doing what we’ve been doing.”

The Tigers, still undefeated on the season, are currently ranked No. 4 in the Class 4A poll with three votes for first place.

WAP Update

The West Alabama Prep Titans fell last Friday, 40-0, to Central Christian, mathematically eliminating the Titans from hopes of a playoff berth.

Head coach Bob Taylor knows the season is over as far as playoffs are concerned, but there are still three more football games to play in the regular season.

And one has to believe that WAP will be aiming for some wins to help boost the confidence of the young Titans.

The Titans are now 3-4 overall and 3-2 in regional play.

Southern Academy Update

The Southern Academy Cougars ran all over Cornerstone Christian last Friday, 35-6, and continue to dominate their region.

Head coach Shaun Bonds has to be impressed with his teams play, but the season is far from over.

Southern Academy hit the road to play Patrician on Friday night.

The Cougars, undefeated and looking stronger every game, are currently ranked No. 3 in the AISA poll with one vote for first place.

John Essex Update

The John Essex Hornets, under head coach Al Shipman, have been surprisingly successful in almost all aspects of the game.

Last Friday night for homecoming, the Hornets put a quick sting to the Akron Rams in a one-sided victory, 73-6.

And that was mainly due to coach Shipman showing mercy towards the close of the game.

However, the Hornets face a tough task this week as they host the extremely powerful Sweet Water Bulldogs on Friday night.
