Shutout streak: Demopolis defense aims for number 3

As the Demopolis Tigers prepare to take the field for tonight’s game against Dallas County, one cannot help but think back to last year’s victory over the Hornets.

Last season, Dallas County gave the Tigers a big fight, but Demopolis walked away with the win.

“We had 17 seniors last season and we had the lead in the 3rd quarter, but we gave up 28 unanswered points and they won 31-20,” Hornets head coach Richard Bush said. “They whipped us when it mattered.”

This year’s Hornets squad is very young and they face a tough challenge going up against the strong and talented Demopolis Tigers.

“We lost two kids in a car wreck after the game last Friday that are hurt now,” Bush said. “So we have to replace 17 seniors from last year and the two kids from last week. The big part is to try to keep the big plays out.”

So what is Dallas County’s biggest strength?

“We’re so young, it’s hard to say what our greatest strength is,” Bush said. “We’re extremely young and some of the guys have been in the battle and played before. Some of them don’t know fear and some of them do. Going into this game against one of the best teams in the state will be a challenge for us.”

Meanwhile, the Tigers come into tonight’s game after two straight shutouts and a load of talent and experience.

“Everything is Demopolis’ greatest strength. They do everything well,” Bush said. “They are sound offensively and have a remarkable defense. There’s not much to say about them. They are having 18-19 starters returning this year and they are a favorite to win it all this year. It’s kind of like playing with a big hammer and we just hope to avoid the hammer as much as possible.”

Coach Bush and his young team of Hornets come to Demopolis tonight as heavy underdogs, but they plan to take the challenge and run with it.

“Coach Goodwin does a great job with his team,” Bush said. “It’s a big challenge for us to play them, but exciting at the same time. Tonight, we’ll get to see what our team is made of and hopefully we’ll play a good football game.”

For Demopolis, this is their first home region game of the season and they look to move to 2-0 in 4A play.

Look for another victory for Demopolis as they continue on their quest to protect their regional title and aim for the state championship.

My prediction: Demopolis 56, Dallas County 7
